Why We Still Call it Dreamland

Here's a fun fact about Taborian Hall: "Dreamland" was never actually the only name on the door. The earliest documented use of "Dreamland Ballroom" we've found is from 1933, a little heart-shaped invitation to the Modernistic Club's Seventh Annual Dance. But over the following decades, the name on the third floor changed again and again. It was Club Aristocrat in 1941, then the "New Dreamland" under promoter S.W. Tucker that same year. By the 1950s it was Club Morocco. By 1960 it had become the Magnolia Room.

Official signage came and went. But ask anyone who grew up on West 9th Street what they called that room upstairs, no matter what decade they're remembering, and they'll almost always say the same word: Dreamland.

That's part of why, when we started this restoration, there was never really a question of what to call it. Names can change on paper. This one never changed in people's memory. You can watch those that remember in the feature-length documentary Dream Land: Little Rock's West Ninth Street.
